Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States—but it’s also one of the most preventable.
At Desert Mobile Medical, we believe in empowering our patients with the knowledge and tools they need to protect themselves year-round, especially under Arizona’s intense sun.
With summer in full swing, now is the perfect time to revisit the essentials of skin cancer prevention and ensure you and your family stay safe.
Skin cancer can affect anyone, regardless of age, race, or skin tone. The primary cause? Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds.
Common types of skin cancer include
Basal cell carcinomau
Squamous cell carcinoma
Melanoma (the deadliest form if not detected early)
The good news is that when detected early through regular skin checks and preventative careu, skin cancer is highly treatable.
1. Wear Sunscreen Every Day
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days.
Don’t forget easily overlooked areas like your ears, neck, and the tops of your feet.
2. Seek Shade
Between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., UV rays are at their strongest.
Whenever possible, stay under shade structures or carry a sun umbrella.
3. Wear Protective Clothing
Wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking sunglasses, and long sleeves offer an extra layer of defense.
Look for clothes with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating.
4. Avoid Tanning Beds
Tanning beds significantly increase your risk of skin cancer.
No tan is worth the long-term damage to your skin.
5. Perform Regular Self-Exams
Check your skin once a month for new moles or changes in existing spots.
Follow the ABCDE rule for melanoma
– Asymmetry
– Border irregularity
– Color variationu
– Diameter greater than 6mmu
– Evolving size, shape, or coloru
If you notice anything suspicious, schedule a personalized consultation with one of our physicians for a professional evaluation.
